It's All About The Beef

Jan 6, 2026

I am not sure what it is about beef, but something about it, is comfortable. Before you come and say the vegans and the vegetarians don’t like a good steak, there are faux steaks that have beautiful cuts and faux hamburger meat to make different types of dishes, so yes, even alternative eating habits find comfort in beef. Yesterday, being a rough day, I needed a steak, so we found Colton’s in Poplar Bluff, MO.

We live in a time of three types of restaurants; okay, we have many types (Chef Ramsey, don’t yell at me). However, we offer a quick and fast drive-thru, as well as quick and casual dining options, and then we have slow and quaint dining. Now, to keep going, formal dining, elegant dining, and Ramsey make Vanderpump a richer experience, but I will never write a piece about either of them because no one I write for, nor myself, will experience those places. Much love, and the food is beautiful. However, back to reality. The steak dining casual quick and casual quaint has a few good to great restaurants, and most people have favorites. I never have to name any, and I am sure you have three; you just know, off the top of your head. However, last night it was a Colton’s and a simple order, just potatoes, and I have a weird thing about fries, so yes, Colton’s. on to it then

It was a 6-oz cut with fries. We never have to say this: if you are going to disrespect a potato, do not touch the sacred spud. However, no disrespect was done. It was a good fry. I will not say a bad word. The steak was lovely, melty, and even had a glisten. I did not use steak sauce because the people in the back knew how to use the shakers that night. Please don’t ever get mad about a little too much pepper or salt; sometimes that is not a fault but a simple accident. As for the wait staff and the support staff, they were on their toes: doors were going, seats were turning left and right, and I don’t think I saw too much food going in circles.

I realize it’s Colton’s, a chain steak restaurant, and they do medium to good because we see them as a Shoney’s level. Yet, what we miss is that these young men and women are training for life in these jobs that some of us see as part-time or worthless, mediocre steps. It’s not a McDonald’s, yet it’s not Ramsey Kansas City Steak Restaurant either; however, some of these kids might want to be his maîtred' one day. These dreams could be crushed by a bad customer over something as simple as not understanding cornmeal.

As for Colton’s, this place is amazing, but Colton’s has high standards, so that's never a problem; the staff is wonderful. Again, Colton’s standards are highly regarded. Always nice to say. The staff was attentive, always, the place was clean, with the ever-so-loving smell of peanuts, and the smiling faces of a happy staff. This is one of the best Colton’s I have been to, a lot better than my last experience when the building caught fire, the manager left the staff in a burning building to cook the food. (True Story) Yet, as always, it needs to be said, if you cannot add to the peace of a place, just don’t go. The wait staff was very attentive, and the food was delicious. One complaint, but it's just me and my own problem; I forgot my bottle of jalapeno ketchup. The night was good, the food was wonderful, and the people were friendly. It is a treasure to find. I recommend you find one like it.
